Olson Baker’s Countdown of the Greatest Women in Design

10. Corinna Warm |
Lighting, furniture and accessory designer.
Worked under a variety of renowned contemporary designers including Shin and Isao Hosoe, Tomoko Azumi, Tom Dixon and Barber Osgerby.
Olson and Baker’s favourite? The Circus Pendant.

9. Hella Jongerius | 1963–
Industrial designer.
Jongerius’ is known for blurring the lines between industry and craft, high and low tech, and traditional and contemporary.
Olson and Baker’s favourite? The Polder Sofa.

8. Lena Bergström | 1961–
Textiles and glass designer.
Received numerous awards, including 12 Excellent Swedish Design; ELLE Decoration Design Award, UK 2002; Swedish ELLE Interiör Design Award 2003 & 2006.
Olson and Baker’s favourite? The Björk Collection.

7. Nazanin Kamali | 1966–
Furniture designer.
Early collaboration in her career saw her work with brands such as Habitat, Harvey Nichols, Karen Millen, Global Village and Aero.
Olson and Baker’s favourite? The Celine Desk.

6. Aino Maria Marsio-Aalto | 1894–1949
Finnish architect and designer.
Married to Alvar Aalto the couple worked closely until Aino’s death, collaborating on several projects that have left a significant mark on global design.
Olson and Baker’s favourite? The Aino Glass.

5. Dame Zaha Mohammad Hadid | 1950–2016
American architect and furniture designer.
In 2012, she was created a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire and in 2015 she became the first woman to be awarded the RIBA Gold Medal in her own right.
Olson and Baker’s favourite? The Moon Sofa.

4. Kathleen Eileen Moray Gray | 1878– 1976
Irish furniture designer and architect
Gray was pioneer of the Modern Movement in architecture.
Olson and Baker’s favourite? The Eileen Gray Side Table.

3. Florence Knoll Bassett | 1917–
American architect and furniture designer.
Studied under Mies van der Rohe and Eero Saarinen.
Olson and Baker’s favourite? The Florence Knoll Sofa.

2. Bernice Alexandra ‘Ray’ Eames | 1912–1988
American furniture designer.
Along with her husband Charles she was instrumental in the early development of modern architecture and furniture.
Olson and Baker’s favourite? The Eames Lounge Chair.

1. Patricia Urquiola | 1961–
Spanish architect and furniture designer.
“Objects must communicate,” Urquiola said. “There should always be a hint of irony, humour or sensuality. I think with my hands. I’m my own client.”
