1. Smart Shelving

Shelving is an invaluable tool for keeping your space clutter-free. From kitchens to lounges, shelving, if styled correctly, can really bring the décor to life. Open shelving is especially useful. Not just for the styling opportunities, but more obviously for access. Jen Stanbrook writes about this masterfully.
“Shelves can be free-standing (for safety, this will require a level floor and a couple of brackets securing the shelves to the wall) or fixed to the walls. The latter option lets you fill more wall-space and accommodate awkward corners, but the walls will need to be strong enough to hold the shelves and their contents – your builder or decorator can advise you here.”

2. Is It All Too Much?

Have you hoarded beyond help? We doubt it; just bite the bullet and hire a professional. Elizabeth Danon offers a decluttering service that will transform your home. She can typically turn your home around in just three sessions!

3. Have a Goal

Surround yourself with images to inspire. A mood board reflecting an oasis of organisation will help you visualise what it is you want to achieve. Helen Sanderson, a decluttering guru advises, “Write your goals down and pin them somewhere prominent while you work. If you lose focus it really helps to give it a glance and remind yourself of where you’re headed.”

Rachel Aust has a fantastic live bathroom project; it’s well worth a watch. Guaranteed inspiration…

4. Don’t Punish Yourself

Life is difficult enough. You do not need a strict regime of organising, cleaning and tidying. You must see decluttering as a new way of life. The habitual changes must work their way into your day-to-day life effortlessly. Vicky Silverthorn believes, “that once you have understood the concept of living with less you will naturally be more selective about what comes into your home.”

5. Out of Sight, Out of Mind

Storage beds are a no-brainer. They’re just as durable, look stunning and the price point barely differs from that of a standard bed frame. The best part is, of course, it’s completely unused space. Store anything from towels to books, children’s toys to your seasonal clothes. Chrissy Halton has written a fantastic post paying homage to the wonders of the storage bed.

6. Clearing Out – It’s Easier Than You Think…

We all do it. We all hold on to things that have seen better days. Smashed lamps, broken toys, ripped clothes, cracked crockery etc… It’s unusable, so recycle it, it’s time to let go. Then take the advice given by Create Perfect’s Fiona Mostyn.
“Things that you no longer use sort easily into two piles – resale and charity.
If you have some items of value that you want to resell there are lots of quick ways to get rid of them. Set aside a day for a car boot sale. Remember the objective is to get rid of as much as possible and not bring stuff home to store again. After the sale donate what’s left to charity as soon as possible.”
The trick is to act fast. If it stays in a bin bag at the end of the corridor or in a cupboard, it’s never going to make it out the door.

7. Intelligent Storage Inspiration.

Work with a professional joinery, carpenter or interior designer. They will help you to create a tailored storage solution. We’ve seen everything from staircase bookcases to bookcase walls. Integrating storage with fixings and features really capitalises on your existing space. It can be as simple as an under-stairs cupboard. Although you can make more creative, more complex storage solutions, like a concealed bookshelf. Search the house for an opportunity. Need inspiring? Katherine Campbell has put together a fantastic post on a variety of past projects.

8. Use Light Colours.

Ena Russ puts it very simply on her wonderful blog.
“Lightroom colours and clutter free decor for bright and modern interior decorating.”
Ideal also for making the most of your space. Off-whites can add the illusion of a much bigger room.

9. Hallway Shoe Storage.

An easy and rather obvious way to get the most out of your hallway is hiding your shoes away. A sideboard or thin chest of drawers will solve the issue easily. If you have the budget, try and involve a professional to create something with added ‘wow’ factor. As Viki Lander advises, smart shoe storage is a very popular desire. It can look incredible if done correctly.

10. Resist the Whim!

As Sam Charles writes, “If you are a bit of a hoarder, it might be time to address your spending habits. If lots of your possessions were bought on a whim rather than out of need, think about how much money you could save by changing your shopping routines. Work with lists, and within a budget. That way, you can reduce your clutter and save some money for something like a holiday.”
