Mika Tolvanen

Finnish designer Mika Tolvanen creates beautiful, simple, and individual products from his studio on the island of Lauttasaari outside of Helsinki. In addition to his renowned Visu chair and Base table, he also designs the popular Restore basket. It is the belief of Tolvanen that good design begins with function, and that the way we use objects defines them, not what they appear to be. Tolvanen’s modern Scandinavian design is a reflection of the way of life in Finland, with a focus on simplicity, minimalism, and eco-friendly materials.

Tolvanen and his wife Julie established Studio Tolvanen after he graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2001. Their studio creates products for both residential and contract use, with a dedication to creating designs that are simple, self-explanatory, and have individual character. Mika Tolvanen’s approach to design is deeply personal, and always considers the occasions for which a product is designed, never allowing design to overshadow function.
