A classic piece from Carl Hansen’s Hans J. Wegner, the CH71 is a contemporary take on the traditional lounge chair. Defined by a combination of flowing curves and straight lines, The CH71’s has a striking yet elegant silhouette.

Originally designed in 1952, the timeless CH71 is undergoing a revival after ceasing production in the 1970s. With a high arched backrest that offers a relaxed sitting position, the arms of the chair surround and comforts the body. The solid wood frame provides stability, with the exposed wooden armrests contrasting with the upholstery for an eye-catching aesthetic.

Use a dampened, soft, non-abrasive, lint-free colourless cloth to wipe the entire surface of your wood, moving in the direction of the grain. Dry the wood using a second non-abrasive cloth. Remember to wipe in the direction of the wood grain. You do not need to polish the wood as part of your regular maintenance, but polishing can restore the wood's natural shine if it begins to look dull. Never use wax-based polish or ammonia-based cleaning products on your wood.

  2. Considering your lounge chair's form is vital. For example, the CH71 Chair is more traditionally upright and better suits activities like reading and watching television. The smaller footprint (width: 70cm x depth: 70cm) also means Wegner's CH71 works well in all kinds of spaces. Lastly, the backrest measures 43cm from the seat height so will support most of the total area of your back. Moreover, with a seat height of 41cm and a carefully angled back (rake), it holds your body very comfortably.

  4. All features, from the CH71’s upholstery to its wooden armrest detailing and legs should be neat and without imperfections. The legs and armrests should each be one solid piece of wood with no visible joins. The inside backrest will only have two clean, straight upholstery seams. Lastly, underneath the lounge chair, there will be its serial number and Hans J. Wegner’s signature engraved on a metal plate.

  6. The lifespan of the CH71 Lounge Chair is upwards of 40 years, potentially much longer if cared for correctly. That said, it is likely that it may need reupholstering after 10-15 years (based on Martindale score of 50,000/frequent use). Luckily almost all the fabric options from Kvadrat to Gabriel offer close to 100,000 meaning they are very long-lasting.
  7. How do I look after the fabric on my Wegner CH71 Lounge Chair?
  8. A gentle vacuum with a soft brush attachment every other week will keep the upholstery on your CH71 dust and dirt free. Performing these small acts of maintenance will significantly extend the life of expectancy of your lounge chair’s chosen fabric. For spillages aim to soak up the foreign liquid quickly using a soft cloth. After this, gently clean with a soft damp cloth and natural, transparent soap solution. Do not use any harsh chemicals on your upholstery and if in doubt contact us or a local upholstery specialist.
