Carl Hansen’s Hans J. Wegner strays away from his staple wooden pieces in order to experiment with adding elements of steel into this concept. Originally designed in 1955, this piece was finally brought to life and put into production in 2014  as a celebration of Wegner’s 100th birthday.

Featuring an industrial-looking robust steel frame with an oval-shaped seat base, the CH88T is both lightweight and sturdy. Its nimble steel frame allows the CH88T to stack on top of itself, making it functional as well as stylish. The focal point of the chair is its striking yet elegant curved wing-like backrest that provides comfort and support. This piece lends itself to Wegner’s Scandinavian design heritage and is a beautiful addition to any modern living space.

Use a dampened, soft, non-abrasive, lint-free colourless cloth to wipe the entire surface of your wood, moving in the direction of the grain. Dry the wood using a second non-abrasive cloth. Remember to wipe in the direction of the wood grain. You do not need to polish the wood as part of your regular maintenance, but polishing can restore the wood's natural shine if it begins to look dull. Never use wax-based polish or ammonia-based cleaning products on your wood.

Its stylish combination of upholstery, wood and steel demonstration Wegner’s talent for making minimalist designs soft and comfortable.
  3. How is the Wegner CH88 Chair Made?
  4. Carl Hansen makes the CH88 by hand in Denmark. The process involves steam bending, hand sawing and sanding a single piece of Beech or Oak for the backrest. Whilst, veneering, cutting and sanding several layers of wood to ensure the seat achieves its robust and slimline profile. The CH88P version of the chair features upholstery on its seat too for extra comfort. Finally, a master craftsman fixes both the seat and backrest to a sturdy steel frame to complete the chair's construction.

  6. Hans Wenger’s CH88T and CH88P Chairs were first seen in 1955 at the international Helsingborg Exhibition in Sweden. The CH88 is still true to the original design, remaining almost completely unchanged. Mid-century furniture remains popular thanks to its timeless yet modern aesthetic and simple materials. This makes the CH88 one of the most popular Carl Hansen chairs in the UK.
  7. What makes the CH88 by Carl Hansen a good dining chair?
  8. Yes, the CH88 dining chair will tuck under most dining tables at 70.5cm tall (average table height is 75cm). The seat height is 45.5cm, providing a roomy 29.5cm for thighs. The width is a generous 57cm too for additional comfort and lastly, the CH88 is stackable – perfect for smaller spaces.
  9. What is the difference between Carl Hansen's CH88P and the CH88T Chair?
  10. The CH88 Chair designed by Hans Wegner is available in two versions. The CH88P is the version of the CH88 Chair with an upholstered seat (in leather or fabric). Conversely, the CH88T is the version of the dining chair with the form-pressed wood veneer seat (without upholstery).
