What to Expect when Ordering Bespoke Upholstery

CAD DRAWINGS ARE A HELPFUL GUIDE

While CAD drawings are useful guides, they may not fully capture the natural character of the physical materials used. This is because 2D digital models have limitations in representing the final 3D object.

SOFT FILLINGS AND ORGANIC UPHOLSTERY PROCESS

Our team of master craftsmen use authentic handcrafting techniques and machinery in the manufacturing process. Working with loose and soft fillings in upholstery naturally creates slight variations in the dimensions, which is why we work to a tolerance of up to 3cm.

ALWAYS AN ORIGINAL PIECE

We create unique and original pieces, and we can also bring your design ideas to life based on inspiration images you provide. If you want a 1:1 replica, we would need the original piece in our workshop to disassemble and study its construction techniques. However, since that’s usually not possible, our experienced upholsterers use their expertise to guide the construction and design decisions for you.

SHAPELY SURFACES

Remember that surfaces might not be completely smooth. Instead, they will have shapely textures that represent the natural characteristics of high-end upholstery materials like foam, feathers, Dacron, fibre, and more…

MAKING A BESPOKE PIECE FOR THE FIRST TIME

Our team consists of experts with decades of experience in their respective fields. When they make a bespoke piece, it’s an exciting opportunity for them to bring something new to life for the first time. But remember every bespoke piece we create is essentially a prototype.

CHALLENGES IN TEXTURE AND BEHAVIOUR

Fabrics are often made from natural fibres, such as cotton, wool, and silk, or synthetic fibres, such as polyester, nylon, and acrylic. These fibres can vary in texture, strength, and colour, which can affect the final appearance of the fabric and make it challenging to predict how it will behave when used for upholstery.

FACTORS AFFECTING MANUFACTURING TIMES

At times, delays can occur when upholstering a bespoke piece of furniture. These delays may arise from factors such as material availability, design adjustments, and unexpected challenges encountered during the upholstery process. Rest assured, we are committed to delivering exceptional results and will keep you informed every step of the way. Your patience will be rewarded with a truly remarkable and personalised piece of upholstered furniture.

HANDMADE CHARM AND CHARACTER

In handmade upholstery, seams and joints may not always be perfectly straight. This is because of the natural variations in materials, the limitations of hand-sewing techniques, and the organic nature of the upholstery process. These factors can lead to slight variations in tension and positioning of the fabric. These unique imperfections contribute to the charm and character of your handmade piece, showcasing its authentic craftsmanship.

EVERY PIECE IS UNIQUE

Bespoke upholstery is akin to art, where each piece is truly one-of-a-kind. Handmade upholstery exhibits a delightful subtle inconsistency, with each piece being ever-so-slightly different. This uniqueness arises from the distinct characteristics of the materials used and the organic nature of the upholstery process. Embracing these variations adds to the beauty and charm of each individual piece, making it a truly special creation.

ENSURING QUALITY AND DESIGN INTEGRITY

Whilst making your bespoke furniture, our master upholsterers will always make the choice which results in the highest quality furniture on your behalf. Along the road, there will be construction choices to make to achieve the desired design and a durable construction, sometimes these can result in small changes to the design.

FOAM MANIPULATION AND FABRIC TENSION

Slight variations in angles and curves can occur between the initial drawing and the final piece. These differences arise from the intricate manipulation of foam and fillings, as well as the tension in the fabric or leather. Embrace these organic nuances that add bespoke charm and a touch of beauty to each unique piece of upholstered furniture, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship.
